We have noticed an increased amount of users reporting their packages failing install in the past week. Further investigation revealed some of these cases were caused by a ransomware attack, encrypting the database used by Synology packages.
Most Multimedia packages such as Download Station、Moments、Photo Station、Video Station...etc rely on that database (PGSQL) which is installed alongside the packages.
You may follow the steps below to check whether the issue is related to the ransomware attack and what steps you should take to address the issue.
1. Log into your Synology NAS via SSH. Click HERE to find out how.
2. Navigate to volume1 (you may need to check other volumes as well):
(type the following command)
cd /volume1/
(then list all the files and folders by typing the following command)
ll
3. Repeat the above steps for /volume1/@database
cd /volume1/@database
(then list all files)
ll
3. If you see a file named README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt in one of the two locations above, then you have most likely been infected by ransomware. If you do NOT see this file, please submit a support ticket HERE instead.
4. Once you have confirmed your PGSQL database has been encrypted by ransomware, you will need to reset the database by using the command below:
(The following command contains a simple script that will backup then reset your PGSQL database)
curl -s https://ftp.synology.com/support_web/Tools/script/pgsql_analyzer.sh | sh -s -- -r
IMPORTANT: Please note that metadata such as configuration, thumbnails, user-inputted data within the packages will be lost and are NOT reversible. However, actual data such as your videos and photos will NOT be touched.
5. You should now be able to install Multimedia packages. If you are still having trouble installing packages after performing the steps above. Please submit a support ticket HERE.
For more details on ransomware attacks, please refer to the information below:
Our investigation has identified that these cases are brute force attacks on the default admin account, rather than a vulnerability on Synology NAS. Once the attacker obtains the password of the default admin account, he would log into the NAS and start to encrypt the data. For more information, please refer to

Please note that Synology cannot decrypt the data for you. If you have any backup data, we recommend you reset your NAS to reinstall DSM and all packages to get a clean system:
a. Follow the steps in this tutorial to reset your NAS (Mode 2):
https://www.synology.com/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General_Setup/How_to_reset_my_Synology_NAS#t3
b. Once DSM and packages are re-installed, restore your data and packages from the backup data.
After the restoration is completed, we recommend you enhance DSM security in the following ways:
1. Enable Auto Block, Account Protection, and 2 Step Verification to avoid brute force attacks.
2. Scan DSM with Security Advisor to ensure there are no weak passwords; set up another user with administrator privilege and disable the default admin account.
3. Set up firewall rules to allow connections from trusted IPs. For example, if your SMB service is reachable from the Internet, we strongly urge you to set up firewall rules to secure your NAS.
4. Please delete any unknown tasks in the Task Scheduler.
